2010 World Cup Gambling on Ghana against US on Saturday

The knockout round has arrived and the match between the United States and Ghana on Saturday was a hugely anticipated one at the usa sportsbook.

The United States squad was finding themselves seriously supported by a suddenly quite interested country that typically doesn’t pay much attention to soccer. The United States got a late goal from Landon Donovan to beat Algeria in their earlier match in an impressive performance that had many Americans beaming with pride. Ghana also guaranteed progression from Group D last week. Several fans believed the United States would go all the way, and the United States was a minor fave in World Cup sports betting in this match.

The United States was just three minutes away from not progressing from Group C when Landon Donovan scored in injury time. In reality, videos of the reactions of United States fans to Donovan’s last-minute goal made the rounds on the Internet, at some point reaching Donovan himself and bringing him to tears. The 1-0 win gave the United States the leading spot in Group C so not only did the United States defeat Algeria they also won Group C and avoided Germany in the round of 16. Ghana appeared as if a much easier match versus the United States, at least on paper. England concluded 2nd in Group C and they proceeded on to face Germany in the knockout round. Germany routed the squad in an embarrassing 4-1 final score, and the English squad were eliminated at that point.

With a victory and two draws, the United States had played pretty well in the World Cup at that point. They’ve been having difficulties to score goals though and they have also had some poor fortune. They easily could have had two or three versus Algeria and at least three in the previous match versus Slovenia. Clint Dempsey has created lots of chances and Donovan has been reliable in the World Cup. Also Jozy Altidore and Michael Bradley have played well. Defensively the United States was allowing a few chances but they have a fantastic goalie in Tim Howard.

Ghana was coming off a 1-0 loss to Germany but Ghana still moved on because Australia upset Serbia in the other match. Ghana and Australia concluded equal on points but Ghana won the goal differential. Ghana had the backing of the fans on Saturday since Ghana is the only African squad to make the knockout round. They were surely reveling in being the last remaining African team at the 2010 World Cup.

Ghana has some ability but they have genuinely struggled to score goals. They have just two in their three World Cup matches. Their goalie, Richard Kingson bailed them out over and again versus Germany.

Ghana was just a squad that the United States could – and most likely should – have been able to beat on a normal basis. It’s not that Ghana is a poor squad. It’s that the United States is just better. So it was a bit of a surprise, and almost certainly an emotional one to Americans, when the United States squad was eliminated by Ghana with a final score of 2-1 on Saturday’s match.

Ghana will now be only the 3rd African squad to make it this far by moving on to the quarterfinals. On Friday they will be competing with Uruguay.
